Adding a SIP carrier

Print this Topic Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

You view a list of defined carriers by clicking on the Carriers link in the Routing box on the left sidebar of the DUAL Softswitch Administration System.  Above the list, there is a link called Create a new SIP carrier.  Click on this link to create a new SIP carrier.

The new carrier will be created immediately, and a Route Number will be allocated and displayed at the top of the page.  The page is exactly the same as the page that is used to change a carrier's properties.  Each section should be completed individually.  The second section holds the settings specific to SIP carriers:

SIP server address

Enter the location of the SIP server.  This information will be provided by your termination supplier.  The destination may either be entered as a DNS name or an IP address.

SIP server entity

Select the type of server operated by the carrier.  The two options are:

Proxy Server: this is a server that does not require a registration.  It accepts INVITE messages, and may challenge call attempts for further authentication.
Registrar: this server works in the same way as a Proxy Server, except that a registration with the server must have been successfully achieved before calls may be sent.

If you have not been provided with this information by your carrier, select Proxy Server, because this works in most cases.

Port

The standard SIP port is 5060.  If your carrier's equipment operates on a different port, enter the port number in this field.  DUAL Softswitch only supports SIP over UDP and not SIP over TCP.

User name

If your carrier does not authenticate your calls by IP address, then they will probably challenge your registration or call attempts.  They will have provided you with a user name, which you should enter into this field.

Password

Enter an authentication password into this field if your carrier have provided you with one.

Domain

If a carrier requires you to use a specific domain name in Request-URIs and From headers, you can enter it into this field.  This is very rare, and in most cases, you can leave this field blank, in which case, the SIP server address is used for this purpose.

All the other sections on this page are described in the section "Changing carrier settings".
